Master’s theses with pilot applications of ES/ PPGIS-ES for biodiversity conservation in Armenia will be accomplished within the framework of the GAtES project. They will be jointly supervised between UHOH and AUA.
This will ideally take the form of tandem constellations between an Armenian and a German student. Targeting the real-world applications taken up on the training workshops (e.g. on using PPGIS-ES to raise public awareness for the effects of land-use change), this will include testing, adapting and refining approaches in order to tailor them to the Armenian context and further advance ES-related knowledge. Additionally, UHOH students will participate in summer projects hosted at AUA.
In order to foster the qualification of AUA students and their integration in the international scientific community, Master’s thesis candidates and Armenian students will visit UHOH to interact with their peers and to attend courses e.g. on landscape change and ecosystem services.
July – September, 2018 – Summer student project with pilot application of ES/ PPGIS-ES for biodiversity conservation in Armenia at AUA, jointly supervised between UHOH and AUA
University of Hohenheim students in Armenia for ecosystem services mapping and research – Thi Ngoc Han Nguyen and Pauline Pfeiffer, both Landscape Ecology MSc students from University of Hohenheim (Stuttgart, Germany), started their visit to the AUA Acopian Center for the Environment on the first week of July 2018 to work on the GAtES Project (German-Armenian Network on the Advancement of Public Participation GIS for Ecosystem Services). Their tasks were to create a land use land cover (LULC) map for the Getik Valley and to develop a questionnaire to interview the communities in the Valley on their land-use patterns and the benefits they receive from the Valley’s ecosystem. The Getik Valley is mainly covered by forest and grassland and the local residents strongly depend on the forest-related ecosystem services. The aim of this project is to provide basic research that could help develop sustainable land-use and ecosystem management for the local communities.
