Sustainable Energy Academy 2018

Sustainable Energy Academy 2018 is jointly organized by the AUA Acopian Center for the Environment and the South Caucasus Regional Office of the Heinrich Boell Foundation. This year’s theme is “The Youth & Civil Society Action towards Sustainable Energy in Rural Communities”. The aim of Academy 2018 is to empower community youth and citizens to seek sustainable energy solutions to improve their lives while protecting the environment.

Better Energy Management Saves AUA 34% in Summer Power Consumption

Yerevan, November 11, 2016 -Energy saving measures at AUA in July 2016 resulted in a remarkable 34% decrease in electrical energy consumption compared with same period last year.

The savings were equal to 50,102 kWh or $4,500. This was equivalent to reductions in 12.5 tons of carbon emissions. “This shows the importance of good energy management. While efficient technologies in buildings are important, equally important is how buildings are used and managed,” says Mr. Ashot Ghazraryan, AUA VP of Operations.

For the month of July, air-conditioning of classrooms in the western wing of the Paramaz Avedisian Building (PAB) were shut down. Classroom use was redistributed to the eastern wing of PAB and AUA’s Main Building. Also, the the cooling levels in the corridors and some of the common areas were decreased without impact on comfort levels.

ENV 202 – ENVIRONMENTAL PROJECTS Undergraduate Course

Starting from this semester AUA is offering a new course called Environmental Projects for undergraduate students.

This upper division course is designed for undergraduate students to gain a deeper understanding and competence in environmental project design, implementation, and evaluation.

The projects can be in technology, science, conservation, management, restoration, promotion or marketing, education, and other related topics.

The course emphasis is on data collection and analysis for assessing the success and impact of project ideas. The students will design and complete a project for the course. The types of environmental projects will vary depending on student and faculty agreement.

The projects may be related to the following topics: Clean technologies; IT, satellite, remote sensing solutions in environmental protection; alternative transport, clean transport; renewable-energy generation or energy efficiency; sustainable water use, solid waste management, sustainable agriculture and food production; mining pollution prevention and management; forest protection, management, and restoration; watershed protection, management, and restoration; air-quality protection, management, and restoration; and flora or fauna monitoring, conservation, and restoration.

BOOK COVER COMPETITION FOR GREEN ARCHITECTURE TEXTBOOK

UNDP-GEF “Improving Energy Efficiency in Buildings” project is publishing a textbook for architecture and urban-planning students on environmentally responsible and energy-efficient building design.  The lead author of the textbook is Alen Amirkhanian, director of AUA Acopian Center for the Environment.
