The American University of Armenia (AUA) Acopian Center for the Environment and the Embassy of Sweden in Yerevan are organizing a workshop and an exhibition titled “Nordic Solutions for Sustainable Cities” on April 9, 2019, at AUA, with financial support from the Swedish Institute.
The event aims to generate discussions in Yerevan and other regions of Armenia on urban environmental and social sustainability by showcasing innovations in urban planning and smart technologies in Nordic cities.
During workshop experts from three Nordic countries will share their experiences on urban mobility, road safety and air quality:
– Bicycle Urbanism and the Cycling History of Copenhagen (Denmark/Copenhagenize)
– Getting There in One Piece: Samples of How to Tackle Road Safety (Sweden/ SweRoad)
– New Air Quality Monitoring Techniques: Their Potential for Use in Local Air Quality Management (Finland/Vaisala Oyj)
The workshop starts with talks by the First Deputy Mayor of Yerevan, the Head of the Urban Development Committee, the ambassadors of Sweden and Finland, and a representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark, the Director of the AUA Acopian Center for the Environment and the Resident Representative for UNDP Armenia.
English and Armenian simultaneous translation will be available.

Lovisa Näswall
Ms. Lovisa Näswall is a partner at Sweroad/Treeline and works as an urban designer with an M.Sc. in Landscape architecture. She works primarily with leading and managing the design of infrastructure and public spaces as well as landscape and townscape analysis and planning related to development, densification and large infrastructure projects.
One of her current projects regards the new tram line in Stockholm, Kistagrenen. She supports the client, Stockholm Public Transport, with procurement documentation and supervision of design. The objective of the project is an efficient, safe and attractive public transport alternative to cars.
Morten Kabell
Mr. Morten Kabell is an urbanist, former politician and advocate for bikes, green transport, and life-sized cities. All his adult life, he has been politically active, locally to improve the city of Copenhagen and move towards a mobility model less dependent on cars; and internationally to spread the knowledge about sustainable and resilient cities.
After serving as Mayor for urban planning, transport, and the environment in Copenhagen, he is now CEO at Copenhagenize Design Company and a Member of the Board of Advisors for the Ross Center for Sustainable Cities at the World Research Institute.
Hannamari Jaakkola
Mrs. Hannamari Jaakkola works as Business Development Manager for Air Quality product area at company Vaisala Oyj in Finland. Vaisala is a global leader in environmental and industrial measurements providing observations for weather and environmental monitoring in the fields of meteorology, air quality, transportation, and industries. At Vaisala, Hannamari Jaakkola has worked in various expert and management positions specializing in environmental measurements. She holds an M.Sc. (Eng) degree in Material Science from the Tampere University of Technology.
Dmitri Kramarenko
Mr. Dmitri Kramarenko has an M. Sc. degree from Helsinki University. Dmitri has worked at Vaisala since 2013 and currently is responsible for sales in selected CIS countries. By an exceptional customer service with a consultative selling approach, he has built comprehensive solutions to the customers with high standards.
The open-to-public exhibition will take place at Agbabian Hall, AUA Main Building, April 9-30. It will highlight the best sustainable urban practices from all five Nordic countries, namely Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Iceland. These examples include green urban planning, road safety, carbon footprint reduction, green mobility including alternative transport, air-quality monitoring, waste management and recycling, and citizen participation.
The exhibition consists of 6 sections:
SWEDEN
The Swedish section shows the results of combining digital solutions with environmental and resource management innovations to create cities that enable people to live in greater harmony with nature.
DENMARK
The Danish section demonstrates the different stages of Copenhagen’s transportation and urban evolution and how they have affected the growth of the cycling culture in the city.
NORWAY
Norway’s capital Oslo marked the start of this year as the European Green Capital 2019 and will act as an ambassador for sustainable urban development. The Norwegian part of the exhibition demonstrates some of the key features of Oslo that make this city so unique.
ICELAND
The Icelandic section demonstrates the use of an online participatory network that brings people together to debate and prioritizes innovative ideas for improving their communities.
FINLAND
The Finnish part demonstrates an example of how sustainable and dense urban districts are developed in a brownfield area near a city center. The structure plan offers examples of how to create a city district that is sustainable from both an ecological and social perspective, as well as offers solutions to air pollution.

The Nordic section highlights 9 principles that Nordic cities use to foster sustainable urban futures.
