About the Project

Aim
Develop and train a Marine Citizen Science Data Network to empower initiatives and related stakeholders to share FAIR data and facilitate data update and integration by end users like policymakers.

How
Support continuous interaction in the whole citizen science data network and provide the necessary technology and data management training to support FAIR data flows and usage.

Impact
Unlock the full potential of Marine Citizen Science by engaging citizens and transforming collected data into accessible, practical knowledge for wider societal and scientific impact.

Project Specific Objectives

Building a pan EU Marine Citizen Science Data Network
Setup a close and actively engaged interaction with the actors involved in marine observation by citizens: with existing citizen science initiatives in the EU marine domain, cost-efficient technology developers, data management experts, and the potential end-users of the data such as scientists and policy makers, supported by an online directory for accessing all materials and output.

Support the development of data management standards, technologies and best practices
Support innovation of selected citizen science groups and cost-efficient technology concepts to uplift them at the data management and protocol level required for data uptake by end-users, by developing and documenting best practices and guidance.

Enable and demonstrate enhanced FAIRness of the citizen science (meta)data
Demonstrate the enhanced FAIRness of the data collected by citizen science initiatives and cost-efficient technologies using the developed best practices and training, to feed into international data infrastructures such as EMODnet, SeaDataNet, EurOBIS and GEOSS, and onwards to DTO, acknowledgeable to the CS initiatives or citizen scientists.

Demonstrate the full potential of CS observation data
Implement real-world demonstrations of the proposed framework in two different use-cases, using cost-efficient devices, elevate CS concepts, and demonstrate the resulting dataflows’ value into actual data products.

Communicate the developed citizen science data approach
Strengthen the network and empower the different communities involved, communicating the latest MCS data, best practices and other results of the project to involve the wider audience, as well as create a fit-for-purpose sustainability plan for the community.
