Strengthening Research in Armenia for Energy Transition toward Climate Solutions (STREACS)

Overview

Strengthening Research in Armenia for Energy Transition toward Climate Solutions (STREACS) is a 36-month project (June 2024 to May 2027) funded by the EU Horizon Europe program. The American University of Armenia (AUA) Acopian Center for the Environment leads the project consortium, which includes six other partners from Armenia, Ireland, and Italy.

STREACS aims to enhance Armenia’s research capacity to support the country’s efforts to accelerate its energy transition toward clean and renewable energy while enhancing its energy security. The program also aims to enable Armenia to become better integrated into the European Research Area. STREACS will facilitate the transfer of knowledge, exchange of best practices, and inclusion in domain-specific academic networks from research institutions and partners in the EU.

STREACS will support research collaborations between partners; study visits by young researchers from Armenia to Italy or Ireland; the development of online asynchronous courses and micro-credential programs for established and young researchers as well as for research administrators; networking within Armenia connecting economists, political analysts, data scientists, environmental and climate researchers, and energy experts; networking with peers in Europe; publishing joint papers in high-profile media outlets and peer-reviewed journals; and organizing a global, academic conference in Armenia on energy transition and energy resilience.

The STREACS Summer School on the Nexus of Energy Security & Transition – The Role of Research will take place on July 22–25, 2025, in Yerevan, Armenia.

Organized by the American University of Armenia (AUA) in collaboration with the National Polytechnic University of Armenia, Scientific Research Institute on Energy, Maynooth University, University of Campania, University of Genoa, and Artemat, the Summer School is part of the EU Horizon Europe-funded STREACS project.

This interdisciplinary program will convene Master’s and Ph.D. students, postdoctoral researchers, and professionals working on energy transition and security across diverse fields, including engineering, policy, law, sustainability, economics, and data science.

Over the course of four days, participants will engage in expert-led lectures, thematic discussions, site visits, and collaborative group work. The program also includes practical sessions on proposal writing for European research and innovation grants.

All participants who complete the program will receive a Certificate of Completion.

The American University of Armenia (AUA), the National Polytechnic University of Armenia (NPUA), and the Scientific Research Institute on Energy (SRIE) collaborate to support early-stage researchers through short-term scientific missions to leading institutions in Italy and Ireland. These missions, lasting up to two weeks, take place at Maynooth University (Ireland), the University of Campania (Italy), and the University of Genoa (Italy).

This initiative is part of the Strengthening Research in Armenia for Energy Transition toward Climate Solutions (STREACS) project—a three-year program funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe framework. STREACS aims to deepen research collaboration, enhance skills, and expand academic networks for Armenian researchers. Ultimately, the project seeks to boost Armenia’s scientific capacity to tackle challenges related to energy transition and energy security.

Work Package 1. Project Management

The objective of this WP is to ensure an efficient and smooth coordination of project activities. The project management and coordination encompass the financial, administrative and contractual components including risk monitoring and mitigation. Clear management structures have been defined to build the framework for effortless implementation of the project goals. The main objectives are to:

  • Establish an appropriate liaison with the EC for financial administration and reporting
  • Establish and maintain a common understanding within the interdisciplinary team by fostering the exchange of project-related information
  • Supervise and monitor the implementation and project progress according to the scheduled work plan, including tasks, deliverables, and milestones
  • Ensure high-quality documentation of the project results in line with the reporting periods
  • Organize meetings of the consortium at all stages and provide minutes and documentation

Work Package 2. Research Cooperation

This WP will develop the main tools for strengthening the research capacity of AUA and the other AM partners. It aims to:

  •  Improve the standing of AM researchers within the international research community
  • Set the ground for long-term cooperation between EU and AM universities and research centers
  • Develop EU-AM joint scientific initiatives lasting well beyond the duration of the project
  • Provide international research experience for junior and senior researchers at AM institutions

Work Package 3. Capacity Building

The objectives of this WP are:

  • Mapping the skill gap of AM Researchers and Research Manager
  •  Design innovative Micro-Credentials and Micro-Programmes to upskill Researchers and Research Managers
  • Development, Implementation, Testing, and Monitoring of the Micro-Credentials and Micro-Programmes

Work Package 4. Stakeholders Engagement

This WP will outline the strategies to recruit and engage with the stakeholders involved in this project. This aims to:

  • Engage multidisciplinary AM stakeholders with different perspectives with regard to energy and climate security
  • Improve the quality of the research that would be done by the teams following the input from stakeholders with different viewpoints and expertise
  • Increase the applicability of the research outcomes, as AM stakeholder input would prioritize the significant research problems.

Work Package 5. Multidisciplinary Research Project

This WP will develop the main tools for strengthening the research capacity of Armenia through a specific applied research project:

  • Implement a multidisciplinary research project focused on assessing the long-term challenges and opportunities related to energy and climate security in Armenia
  • Develop a policy roadmap as a result of the research project
  • Provide a practical, hands-on approach to developing the research skills and capacities of program participants
  •  Provide a practical, hands-on approach for developing research management skills of the administrative staff

Work Package 6. Communication, Dissemination, Exploitation & Replication

This WP will outline the strategies to communicate and disseminate the event updates, outcomes, and results of STREACS’ activities, as well as streamline the implementation and the replication of the project results by different AM stakeholders. This aims to:

  • Facilitate the knowledge transfer to the stakeholder network
  • Raising the visibility of the STREACS project by making the project methodologies, results, and outcomes accessible to the stakeholder network and larger audiences
